From phrase to sentence and to a paragraph
Who is this course for?
The course The basics of academic writing. Part 1 is for the researchers who are getting acquainted with the main principles of academic writing. It is for those who take the first steps in writing various academic texts in English (letters, research proposals, applications for a grant or a conference, articles). The course may be also useful to experienced researchers who already publish their works in English but want to improve the quality of their writing by polishing their arguments in English and mastering the basic grammatical and syntactical elements of English academic text. The course may also be helpful to Russian speaking University students who have to write essays and other academic text within their university study contexts.
In this course, you will:
- familiarise yourselves with the basic elements of an academic text - a phrase, a sentence and a paragraph
- learn to build different kinds of phrases, make out what compound predicate is about and when to use passive or active predicates
- learn to express your opinion with help of grammatical means
- enhance your understanding of English word order and build sentences according to it
- develop ideas at the level of sentences and learn how to break long and unclear sentences into short and clear ones
- learn to utilize connectives and coherence devices to link sentences so that they make it to a logical paragraph
Course length: 3 weeks
Course structure and format:
The course consists of three modules. Each module comprises several topics, linked logically to each other. Each week you tackle one module watching video presentations, doing your readings and exercises to recycle your writing skills and perform writing tasks to ensure your understanding of the issues discussed. At the end of each module, you complete a written assignment and receive personal corrective feedback from me, which enables you to maximize your learning. The course is read in English, the language of video presentations and readings corresponds to B2 level (CERF) and will be easy to understand for everyone who is of this (and higher) level of proficiency.
Course entry requirements:
a) minimum language proficiency level: upper-intermediate and higher (B1+, B2, С1);
b) brief written explanation (not more than 150 words) of the reasons why you want to pursue this course

From paragraph to an academic text
Who is this course for?
The course An introduction to academic writing. Part 2 is a continuation of the course An introduction to academic writing. Part 1. The course isfor the researchers (and researchers-to-be: for postgraduate students ), who start writing different academic texts and want to publish them in English in international journals. If you can build simple and compound sentences, know how to link them logically, and the length of your sentence is less than 5 lines, you can skip the first part of this course and start off with the second part. Part 2 will suit those who are struggling with the logical structuring of the text. It is also for those who would like to learn how to develop an argument at the level of both: a paragraph and a whole text.
On this course, you will:
- familirise yourself with a paragraph and with the principles of building a whole academic text
- gain effective lexico-grammatical and suntanctial techniques to develop an argument in a paragraph and in the text
- enhance your knowledge of cohesive devices and connectives to logically link sentences and paragraphs to each other
- train to develop the topic of a paragraph considering its aim (giving examples, exmlanation, causes and effects analyses etc.) and adding supporting arguments
- gain the ability to use and synthesise different types of paragraphs in one text
- enhance your knowledge of the structure of an academic text, consider two main types of structure that are used in academic texts and learn how to write different elelements of these types of structure
Course length: 3 weeks
Course structure and format:
The course consists of three modules. Within each module, you will consider two to four topics that are logically connected. Each week you will tackle one module. At the end of each module, you will have a written assignment and get my personal written feedback to help you capitalize on your work. The course is read in English. The language of presentations, videos and assignments corresponds to the B2-C1 levels and won't be difficult to understand.
Language and other requirements to enrol on the course:
a) upper-intermediate B2. The course will also suit those with C1 (advanced) level.

Writing for research
Who is this course for?
The course Advancing your academic writing (Writing for research) is for those who are applying for postgraduate (master's and/or PhD) programmes that are read in English either in Russia or elsewhere in the world. It is for those who learn how to write essays and academic text in English as written assignments or exams in the University settings. This course is also for Russian-speaking researchers, who publish their research work in English in international journals and want to understand the principles of writing for research.
On this course, you will:
- familiarise yourself with the main principles of written research argumentation
- learn to formulate a central argument and develop it throughout your text, supporting it with additional arguments, examples and evidence
- master the skills of paraphrase, learn to analyse research papers and synthesise arguments presented in different sources
- gain the secrets of how to avoid plagiarism and gain writing techniques to write a critical summary of an article, which is one of the main elements of research articles and research essays
- enhance your knowledge of how to work with references according to different citation styles (APA, Harvard citation style и т. д.).
